Your Best Fall Fashion Statement starts with Healthy Skin

October 19th, 2012

Fall has finally arrived in Vancouver and as we say goodbye to summer, we welcome the rejuvenation that Fall brings with it.  It is the perfect time to get your skin looking its best by repairing any damage from the summer and preparing your skin for harsher winter weather ahead.

In order to help you look your best this Fall and make your skin your #1 fashion statement, we’ve put together a list of the Top ten ways that can help you achieve beautiful, youthful skin.

THE TOP 10 WAYS…TO MAKE YOUR SKIN LOOK BEAUTIFUL!

TIP #1 – IT’S ALL ABOUT SUN PROTECTION!

Ultra violet light from the sun causes wrinkling, brown spots, broken capillaries, collagen damage and of course some nasty skin cancers.

Be sun savvy by wearing protective clothing and daily use of sunblocks containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

TIP #2 – DON’T FORGET TO TAKE YOUR VITAMINS

Daily use of a vitamin A derivative called a retinol, will improve fine lines and dyspigmentation.  Ensure your retinol cream is strong enough to do the job and be patient as the recovery process does not happen overnight.  We recommend working with a Doctor to find the best retinol cream for you.

TIP #3 – ANTIOXIDANTS DON’T JUST WORK FROM THE INSIDE

Antioxidants applied topically daily, such as Vitamin C preparations can help reduce redness and reverse some of the effects of sun damage.

TIP #4 – EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE

Gentle exfoliation of your face with a mild polishing formula or microdermabrasion can help to remove dead skin cells and should be done regularly.

TIP #5 – EXPERIENCE THE WONDER OF PHOTOREJUVENATION

Photorejuvenation using intense pulsed light is an excellent option to manage sun damage, broken capillaries and brown sun spots.  It is the #1 anti-aging tool available!

TIP #6 – COMBAT TEXTURE & SCARRING ISSUES

Fractionated laser resurfacing is used to treat acne scarring and to improve the skin’s texture.  The treatment also tightens the skin and reduces fine lines.

TIP #7 – TIGHTEN YOUR SKIN

Non-surgical tightening procedures such as Ulthera can improve skin laxity.

TIP #8 – COMBAT THE SIGNS OF AGING WITH VOLUME

Dermal fillers are a safe way to add volume to areas of the face that have hollowed with aging.  It also helps to restore youthful contours.

TIP #9 – SOFTEN LINES

Botox injections soften the lines of facial expression to make your skin look more youthful.

TIP #10 – MAKE YOUR HEALTHY LIFESTYLE A PRIORITY

Finally a basic healthy lifestyle does wonders for our appearance.  A healthy diet, plenty of exercise and adequate sleep are essential.  A moderate consumption of alcohol and not smoking can really make a big effect on making the skin look healthier.

Sunblocks

July 30th, 2012

Sunblocks protect your skin by absorbing and/or reflecting UVA and UVB solar radiation. All sunblocks have a Sun Protection Factor(SPF) rating. The SPF rating indicates how long a sunscreen remains effective on your skin.Water sports and sweating can reduce the effectiveness of sunblocks.Studies suggest that sunscreens should have an SPF rating of at least 30 and be reapplied frequently through out the day.

There are two types of sunblocks available:chemical sunblocks and physical sunblocks.Chemical sunblocks work by absorbing UV energy before it affects the skin while physical sunblocks work by reflecting or scattering UV radiation before it reaches the skin. Some products are available that combine both types.

The  two types of physical sunblocks that are available are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They both protect the skin against both UVA and UVB.UVA is transmitted through glass so that even  driving your car can expose you to the harmful effects of UV radiation.Because these are physical agents they can safely be applied to those people with more sensitive skin.

There are many chemical sunblocks with varied ingredients available.Generally this type of sunblock requires several types of chemicals to be effective. This increases the chances of skin reactions.Physical blocks are a better choice in that they offer UVA and UVB protection and do not often cause any skin sensitivities.

Sunblocks come in a variety of forms.Lotions, sticks, gels, oils, stays and creams are all effective.Sunblocks should be applied liberally 15-20 minutes before anticipated exposure. They should be reapplied after water sports and or sweating. Some brands are water-resistant and can be used by active people involved in water sports.

Sunblocks can be very effective if used properly, however blocking UV radiation with shade, hats and clothing is still by far the best way to protect yourself.

Limiting sun exposure, especially for lighter skin individuals, can reduce the incidence of various skin cancers and keep your skin looking better  as you age.

In my next blog I will discuss various skin cancers and how they  relate to sun exposure.

Winter Skin Blahs

January 27th, 2012

Although we live in one of the best cities in the world for managing and maintaining beautiful skin, our coastal weather can still wreck havoc in the winter months.

No matter where you live, cold weather leads to dry skin which can often leave your skin looking dull, rough, scaly and flaky and can often lead to other skin ailments including redness, acne and even dermatitis.

Ultherapy

January 24th, 2012

Our lives are very much expressed by our faces. The effects of sun exposure, our genetics, and even our patterns of expressions are reflected in our facial skin.As we age the bone structure of our face also changes. The way we look as the years pass are indeed a sum of these and probably many other influences.
Surgery has always been an option to address facial concerns.Recently a remarkable new technology called Ultherapy that can tighten and lift our skin has become available.Ultherapy is a safe, effective, and non invasive method of improving the firmness of facial skin. The technology uses focussed ultrasound to stimulate our own collagen.
You are able to return to normal activities right after the procedure.A good candidate is generally someone with skin that has developed loss of skin firmness causing a less defined facial appearance.
A complimentary consultation in the office can determine if you are a good candidate for Ultherapy.

Microdermabrasion-An Exfoliative Procedure For All Skin Types

February 7th, 2011

Microdermabrasion has been widely available for many years as a tool to gently exfoliate the outer skin layer. It is usually performed using a diamond tip applicator or a jet of fine mineral crystals that pass over the skin’s surface. The exfoliated skin is gently suctioned away.

The procedure can be thought as a skin polishing treatment that may benefit  a variety of skin conditions.Microdermabrasion may be used to help unplug pores that occur in acne.Dry,thickened dull skin may become more lustrous after a treatment.Fine lines and uneven skin texture may be improved. It can be thought of as part of a good skin management program.

Treatments are not painful and can usually be done in thirty minutes. It is a gentle and effective procedure with no downtime.

Common remarks are ,”My skin looks and feels amazing”,”My skin is smooth and my makeup applies so smoothly”.

Microdermabrasions can be performed using a Silkpeel dermal infusion method. In this procedure different solutions can be gently applied to the skin during treatment for oily acne-prone skin and dry skin.Treatments are meant to be progressive.Generally, results are most noticeable after the third treatment, although the skin will look fresher after the first session.Usually treatments are performed about every two weeks for a series of six.Maintenance may be done every two months.
